Winnipeg, MB to Sault Ste Marie, ON

Time Change sign

July 11th we left Winnipeg a little later than we planned so it was quite late when we arrived into Dryden where we spent the night in a motel.  The next day we passed the sign that let us know that let us know the time change. We are now on Eastern Time.

Kenabeka Falls

Then we went as far as Kenabaka Falls which is just before Thunder Bay. The water was running pretty fast and so you could hear the thundering sound of water as it came over the falls. A really pretty area!  The weather forecast was for thunderstorms in the night so it was another motel night.

The next morning we went for a tour of Fort William as it was in 1816. Thomas Douglas, the Earl of Selkirk and prominent shareholder in the Hudson’s Bay Company had taken control of Fort William, the inland headquarters of the Northwest Company. His arrival was in retaliation for the destruction of his colony in the west. It is quite historical and was interesting.

Sharen - Terry Fox monument

As we left Thunder Bay, we visited the Terry Fox Scenic Lookout which is up on a bluff beside the highway, named Terry Fox Courage Highway, overlooking Thunder Bay and Lake Superior. It is very cool!    As everyone knows, Terry was an outstanding young man and it is heartwarming and definitely worth a visit to read the plaques and see the life size sculpture as he ran across Canada to raise money for cancer research. His quest began in 1980 but sadly, due to the return of cancer, he had to end his journey in Thunder Bay in 1981.

Wawa Goose

On to Wawa, which is a neat place.  They have the Wawa Goose here. It is huge!

There is a nice walkway and painted chairs with all kinds of interesting sayings on them.

We enjoyed the drive to Sault Ste Marie along Lake Superior.  There is an area with Ojibwe pictoglifs and many pretty water views from the highway area. This is a beautiful drive.
