Guelph-Waterloo-Hamilton

Our next stop was at my nephew’s Tony & Kate’s place in Guelph with their excited kids James & Ella. They had just had a pool put in.  Talk about little fishes!!! Kate’s young nephews were there also. It was fun to see the kids having so much fun and playing so well together.  We were impressed!!   I went for a swim and noticed that the pool was salt water…..really nice!
Kate & Tony had a vacation booked and we had thought we would miss them, so we were especially happy that we arrived in Guelph a day earlier than anticipated.

Guelph has a really cool downtown. We spent some time just walking around and enjoying the area. We bought a picnic lunch and took in a free concert in one of the squares. Our Lady of Immaculate Conception built in 1876 was beautiful although the front was under renovation.

We met with my niece Tracy for breakfast before she had to go to work at the University of Guelph. Afterwards we went for a long walk in the Arboretum. It’s really cool with lots of trails. There are several plaques dedicating specific groups of trees to the memory of various persons.  A ceremony is conducted once a year in Sept. Pretty neat!
We then went for another short walk in a pretty area through a covered bridge.

The author of “In Flanders Field” was born in Guelph. We went to visit the house of Colonel John McCrae but it was closed. However we did enjoy wandering around the beautiful grounds surrounding it. Very interesting!

My teacher friend Nellie is now living in Guelph with her sister Irene. I joined them for a nice lunch at their house.  It has been probably more than 30 yrs since I have seen them.

Next stop was Waterloo for a visit with my friend Susan and her hubby Mike. All three of us had met at Laurentian University in the summer of 1974. They married in 1975. Susan and Mike ended up moving to Timmins after I had moved to Vancouver. We have stayed in touch all these years. I last saw them was in 2000. Retirement took them to Waterloo and it was so great to see them again and have a good visit. Was really nice to meet their two daughters  Jennifer and Deanna.  The girls including Susan are very creative. They were going to Susan’s daughter-in-law’s baby shower and carved a bassinet out of watermelon and added various fruits for the baby…really cute!

Hamilton is where my cousin Linda & Larry live. It’s been a long time since I have seen Linda and when she opened the door it was…. “oh my, Linda, you look so much like your Mom” .  We had a wonderful visit and it was the first time I had met Larry.  They were so good to us and we really had a great time.
While at Linda’s we got talking about our Newfie cousins and she mentioned that Rob Tubman lived not too far from her. I called him and introduced myself and said, “I’m your first cousin”. Rob’s response was, “well then, I guess I should come and meet you”. I was thrilled!!  Rob & Kelly came over and it was wonderful time together. When we go to NFLD I will meet his sisters Val & Lorna and then I will have met the entire family as I have previously met Dave and Norma.  This is just so
exciting!

Linda , Rob, Sharen - first cousins!
