In Peterborough we had tea with Marion, one of my teacher
friends who has retired here to be near her two sons. She has a lovely
apartment and loves the area. It was nice to reconnect!
Barb, a high school friend & her husband Doug joined us for lunch. I don’t get to see them very often so we enjoyed our short time together. It has been years since I have seen Doug. Barb I last saw each other at the Englehart 100 year celebration in 2008. Always nice to connect!
We then drove to Hastings and spent a couple nights with my cousins Kathy & Gary. I always enjoy my time with them. We spent the first evening copying old family pictures and emailing them to me…..technology is good! Then we played cards…Keith & I are not very good players!!
The next afternoon we all went to Havelock to visit with another cousin Dianne, her daughter Kara & Serge, and her son Bentley. It was great catching up with Dianne and meeting her kids. She has a lovely home on the lake and now Kara & Serge live in the “cottage” ,of which they are doing a great job renovating. Bentley lives close by also. Dianne fed us a wonderful dinner before we headed home to Hastings. I just love all the reconnecting that is happening on this trip! Keith is taking it all in good stride and trying to remember who belongs to who and where! He is meeting a ton of my relatives and long-time friends.
After saying “so long” to Kathy and Gary we headed for Kingston.
Uncle Jahz and his lovely lady Jenny showed us a wonderful time. Uncle Jahz always has a twinkle in his eye and sees the best in situations. It was extra nice to be able to spend time with Jenny too. She is a super lady. An extra pleasant surprise was having a short visit with Sean, Uncle Jahz’ son. It’s been a very long time since I have seen him.

Keith & I went to see Fort Henry which was built during the War of 1812 to protect the British dockyards in Navy Bay. It later became more important in defending the completed Rideau Canal. The history of the fort is included in a picture.

It was great to listen to the summer troops practicing for a musical presentation later that evening.
Did you know that Kingston was the very first capital of Canada? We didn’t. It has a real pretty downtown with boutique shops and restaurants.
The water front is very scenic. Queens University takes up a lot of real estate there.
Sir John A MacDonald, a Father of Confederation and Canada’s first Prime Minister lived in Kingston for a time.
The house he lived in is now known as the Bellevue House National Historic Site of Canada. It is an outstanding Canadian example of Italianate architecture in a Picturesque manner.
We enjoyed going through it.

We have many more people to visit with in Ontario and will do so on our return from the Maritimes. We will also visit Montreal at a later date. Now our quest is to get to New Brunswick and then to Nova Scotia and catch the ferry from Sydney to Port Aux Basque, NFLD.
